Handmade Thursday: Simple Tote Bag

What you will need:

2 pieces fabric 13 1/2 inches X 14 inches (outside)

2 pieces fabric 13 1/2 inches X 14 inches (lining)

2 pieces 4” X  about 22″ long

How to do it:

*I’m really big on cutting all my fabric for the whole project first; then iron everything.  I highly recommend this.  Also, a big tip on getting your fabric to lay straight throughout this adventure is to iron as you go.  After every step, iron.  It will really help. Okay, get started!

1. After cutting your straps, press each outside edge together.

2. Fold fabric in half and then press.

3. Top-stitch down each side of the strap, close to the edge. Now you have two straps ready for your tote!

4. Next start with the tote bag itself. Sew lining fabric and outer fabric right sides together on three sides {Leave the top open}.  The bag can be made any size, but I made this one 13 1/2 inches wide and 14 inches long.

5. Then, pinch the bottom corners of both liners together and stitch across 1 1/2 inches from corner.
6. Place lining fabric inside the outside fabric right sides together. Then place straps in between right sides of fabric on each side about two to  three  inches from the side edge.
7. Pins straps and top edge of bag well. Stitch around top of bag 1/2 inch from edge. Leave a 2-3 inch opening for turning bag (I usually leave this on the side).
*Be sure to leave enough room to turn it or you’ll end up really struggling, as you can see I did below!
8. Then turn the bag inside out. Your pretty “right” sides will be out in all their glory.
9. Push lining {mine is the ivory floral} inside the bag and top stitch all the way around the top of bag. This will close up the opening you left for turning.
Now it’s all done! You are ready to throw all your pursey things into it or use it for shopping. Mine is going to be a purse. Plus, I think I am going to add some rosettes to it to jazz it up a bit. What do you think?
