Handmade Thursday’s: Split Pea Soup with Ham Bone

I know normally I put a craft up on my Handmade Thursday, but I happened to make a soup today that I just had to share.  And hey, it was made by my hands so here it is: delicious split pea soup!

This Easter we were with Moviestars family which means I got to spend it with my lovely sister-in-laws whom you know very well, Bonnie and Claire.  Bonnie made a ham – yum –  and what was left over? Oh yes, a ham bone. So Bonnie gave it to me and I decided I wanted to make Split Pea Soup.  I tried to make one last year but it never happened. So I was determined to do it this year. I didnt have a recipe because I’d never made one before but I began looking around the good old internet to see if I could find one. I came across a few that I thought had good ingredients but not one that made me think, “Wow! Thats sounds awesome!” So, I came up with one myself.  Now, as I said it is Split Pea Soup with Ham Bone so make sure you’ve got one of those.

crockpot split pea soup with hambone

Ingredients:

8oz green split peas
8oz lentils
1 ham bone (make it pretty meaty)
1 brown/yellow onion
3 large carrots
2 ribs of celery
3 cloves of garlic
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
 3 cups hot water
3 cups hot chicken stock
a good pinch of quality salt
How to:
1. Layer all ingredients in a crock pot in the order given.
2. Pour in water and broth; do not stir ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on low 7 to 8 hours, until peas are very soft and ham falls off the bone.

4. During last 30 minutes, take out the ham bone.

5. Dice any meat remaining on bone and return to crock pot.
And that’s all folks! It turned out eeeeeexcellent.  The only thing I might want to try next time is putting in whole peppercorns as opposed to ground pepper (cause I L-O-V-E, love pepper) and either ground mustard or adding liquid mustard to each serving. I read that on one of the recipes I found but totally forgot. Next time.
