low-calorie-watermelon-sorbet-recipeI know that this recipe is coming a bit late to help you beat the summer heat. Nonetheless, it is worthy of sharing as soon as possible. If you still have access to watermelons, I highly suggest that you mull over making a trip to the store to pick up some fruit. This watermelon sorbet recipe is crisp, cold and sweetened perfectly by the fruit alone. If you wish to sweeten it up some more, you can add a sprinkle of stevia to do just the trick naturally and without adding calories.

You will need a food processor or a good food chopper to make this watermelon sorbet recipe. It can be as simple as a Ninja chopper or a cheap one off of Amazon. I personally use a Hamilton Beach food processor that costs less than $30. I have made this recipe both with a Ninja chopper and with a food processor, and not surprisingly it works best with a food processor.Plus, you can make bigger portions with a food processor 🙂 Nevertheless, you do not necessarily need to go buy a new appliance in order to start making your own natural ice cream and sorbet recipes at home. By the way, an awesome vegan ice cream recipe is coming post haste.

If you have browsed our recipes section lately, you have probably noticed that I am on a low-glycemic and natural kick. That is because I am eating well as part of treating my PCOS. It is easy for me to resist starches and empty carbs when it comes to savory foods, but it has been a struggle with sweets and desserts. It has truly brought out the cook in me. Thankfully, it has also satiated my sweet tooth. You may be thinking that watermelon is high in glycemic index. That is deceptively true. While it is high in the glycemic index at 72, it is low in glycemic load at a mere 5. The glycemic index will tell you how quickly your body will process the the food and therefore its impact on your blood sugar. The glycemic load takes into account how many carbs are in a given food. So, even though your body processes watermelon quickly, it does not have that many carbs so it will not spike your blood sugar. This article gives a good overview.

I used this watermelon sorbet recipe countless times over the past summer trying new ingredients and ingredient ratios. Now, I did not fib when I said that this only recipe only requires three ingredients. That is true. However (I apologize that there is a caveat), if you want to make a delicious variation of watermelon sorbet, I suggest tossing in a few frozen strawberries. I think that it helps with the sweetness and tartness a bit without surrendering any flavor of the watermelon. If you want pure watermelon, then stick to the original recipe and enjoy the watermelon goodness.

That looks wonderful! It’s so nice to find a non-gluten, low sugar snack that’s also refreshing. For the most part, snacks are often carb laden or have a good amount of sugar.ReplyCancel

Oh wow, this looks so TASTY….can’t wait for watermelon season to come around again.

I’m thinking I might add a pinch of salt as well. I always eat my watermelon with salt. I know its bad for me, but I grew up eating it that way. Watermelon just doesn’t taste the same without a little salt.

    Thanks for the recipe! Yum.ReplyCancel

wedding photo musts the mother of the groom with her son groomFamily is very important on the wedding day. We have already discussed capturing photos of the bride with her mother, the first look of the father of the bride, the groom with his father and both the bride and groom with their grandparents. Family members usually play integral parts in the wedding ceremony and reception. There are many recognized wedding traditions involving family members. These include the father giving away his daughter bride at the altar and dances between parents and their newlywed children. There are also unofficial traditions such as siblings and other relatives acting ushers, ring bearers and members of the wedding party. Besides the new union forged by the bride and groom, these are the most important bonds to capture on film on the day of the wedding.

wedding photos musts the mother of the groom with her son

It is fairly easy to capture the bride with her mother and groom with his father on film before the wedding ceremony. Each often helps their bride daughter and groom son dress for the wedding. The father of the bride also has a moment alone with his daughter bride as he prepares to walk her down the aisle. For grooms who walk down the aisle with their mother, the moments before and the event itself offer ideal photo opportunities. Here you can capture the bond between mother of the groom and her son as he prepares for his marriage. For those who do not choose to have the mother of the groom accompany her son down the aisle, finding moments of the two  alone together in an uncontrived manner may be difficult. It is important, though, to capture their love for one another in a genuine way during the day. That will be far more memorable for each of them and their family than a staged photo of smiles straight at the camera. Any photos of the two together will be lovely, but the less staged the more powerful they are. It may be difficult to capture this bond naturally, but a mother’s love is worth capturing in an authentic way on this important day.

natural strawberry lemonade recipe

Summer is proving to be no picnic for us. Even though I am less than ten miles from the ocean, temperatures are topping 100° and hanging steady in the 90’s. I am not dealing with much humidity, either. With weather like this in Los Angeles and around the country, one is in need respite. What better liquid refuge from the summer heat is there than lemonade? That’s right – strawberry lemonade.

If you are like my family, you strive to do things the natural (and usually more delicious) way whenever possible. The calories and chemicals can add up quickly when you buy pre-made lemonade or pre-packaged lemonade mixes. Lemonade is one of the simplest and tastiest enduring beverage recipes. To make it delicious requires the use of real lemons.

In order to be able to drink this strawberry lemonade recipe time and time again, it necessary to cut down the sugar. This is where Stevia comes in. Stevia may not be the best sweetener when it comes to baking, but as any Stevia user knows, it is ideal for sweetening beverages. Cutting down on the sugar by using Stevia is better for your teeth and diet.

My personal love of Stevia stems from my need to eat a low glycemic diet in order to treat my PCOS naturally. Without it, I would be confined to consuming a few coconut sugar-sweetened drinks and desserts here and there. That is no way to live, so I have started taking a more natural approach to desserts. You do not have to sacrifice flavor (especially sweets) in the name of healthy eating.

This strawberry lemonade recipe is case and point. I enjoy drinking it freshly made, so my recipe it for a single serving only. It is quite easy, though, to ramp up the serving size to create a pitcher of sweet lemonade. Also, if you like carbonated water at all, I highly recommend using it (flavored or unflavored) in this recipe. I am only a moderate fan of carbonated water and I LOVE making this recipe with carbonated water. Enjoy!

Lindsey and her husband welcomed their first child last May. They had a beautiful baby girl, the first granddaughter of of our family, Imogene. Wasting no time, they are now expecting their second child just two months after Imogene’s first birthday. Our entire family was excited to learn if we would have a second granddaughter in the family or if Lindsey and her husband would have both a daughter and a son. Needless to say, we eagerly looked forward to the announcement! Lindsey did not disappoint with clever baby gender reveal idea {look for it in the list below}.

Gender reveal parties and announcements have become very popular recently as more and more parents find out the sex of their baby before the birth. To help the other mothers and fathers-to-be come up with creative gender reveal moments, I have compiled a list of clever ideas to make the announcement at a party and through the mail.

Let’s get started with gender reveal ideas for parties. Gender reveal parties are fun, because you get to share fun, love, friendly rivalries{who is rooting for a boy and who is rooting for a girl?}and reactions with those you love the most. You can do the gender reveal in front of your friends and family or they can join in on the fun with you using one of these ideas.

The pinata is a tried and true gender reveal favorite. Pinatas already make for fun party games, but they get even cooler when they offer more than candy. You could keep pinata fun for the kids and fill it with pink or blue lollypops, jolly ranchers, airheads, mints, taffy, rock candy, m&ms and more. Or, you can fill it with confetti, flower petals, glitter or balloons for the more grown up crowd. There are plenty of cool designs for a baby shower and gender reveal party, too.

“Shower” Gender Reveals

A fun way for adults and kids to join in on the gender reveal announcement is through a silly string war. You will need to let store clerks or close friends in on the gender in order for the gender reveal to remain a surprise for you. Just wrap some butcher paper around the silly string bottles to keep color a secret during the party until you are ready to let them rip. The couple can join in on the fun or let the crowd spray them with the announcement.

You can get the crowd involved in the gender reveal by arming them with {washable} paint. You will need to let some close friends in on the gender in order to keep the reveal a surprise for you. This way is a bit more fun for the couple expecting, because they are the only ones not in on the gender making their reactions all the better.

You can keep the squirt gun fight a family affair, which makes a fun announcement photo. Everyone can be armed to join in on the fun. Or, you can give the big brother or big sister the squirt gun and let them spray mom and dad with the gender reveal.

For a  gender reveal that does not require laundry or a shower afterward, but still delivers on color and excitement, try confetti blowers or sticks. The gender reveal raining down the couple and crowd is fun for everyone present and it makes for an exciting photo.

Party Food Gender Reveal Ideas

You can turn the gender reveal into a drinking game — not that kind of drinking game. With some fizzy bombs, you can make the gender reveal drinkable. It is also a great way to toast to the occasion.

You can leave the gender reveal until the end and let guests discover the sex with their dessert. You can do the gender reveal by cutting into the cake. You can make the inside of the cake pink or blue or make a pinata cake.

Sporty Gender Reveal Ideas

The gender reveal can be as simple as a fun game of pitch and hit between husband and wife with the crowd looking on. You can either create or buy a powder bomb baseball. Just make sure that it is held together well in case the hubby isn’t a pro and swings and misses 🙂

gender reveal ideasphoto @ Momtastic

The expecting couple can have a friendly game to reveal the gender. You can play darts or arrows in front of the crowd popping balloons to do the gender reveal. There are several ways to do this, including popping balloons to reveal a message on the board behind it and popping balloons filled with paint.

Crustless Spanakopita Recipe

If you have read our blog before, then you are probably already familiar with how much I love Greece. You can check out my posts about my trip to Athens, Rhodes and Santorini. I will write about my archaeological excavation in Greece soon as well! My love for Greece congruously includes Greek food. I have explored many Greek islands and most of mainland Greece except the Peloponnese. This is odd considering that the Peloponnese is the only place in Greece from which my mother’s family hails. Despite my oversight, I love what food that I have tried in Greece – from popular dishes all around Greece to regional favorites.

One of my all-time favorite dishes of any cuisine is spinach pie (known as spanakopita in Greek). I used to eat this everyday for breakfast while I studied abroad. I am not alone in this. Like gyros, this is one of the perennial national dishes of Greece. Unfortunately, as with all heavy, breaded foods, you will eventually gain weight when it becomes part of your regular diet. Due to my PCOS diagnosis, I can no longer afford to include sugar and empty/refined carbohydrates in my diet. I heard about making a crustless version of spanakopita from grecophiles and so I turned to the internet as we all do nowadays. After a lot of trial and error, I have created my favorite crustless spanakopita recipe. Because this recipe uses coconut flour instead of regular white flour, it is low-glycemic and low-carb. That does not say anything about the fat content, though (which is why I use light feta and skim milk). Nonetheless, you cannot beat the savory taste for a breakfast dish. For me, it is difficult to put down (which shows me that I have gotten it right).

What I love most about this crustless spanakopita recipe more so than other spanakopita recipes is the tang of the lemon zest. It adds flavor to the spinach and complements the salty feta very well. It is a delicious way to get some veggies into your breakfast or lunch. In my experience, one pan can last for a week’s worth of breakfasts. Although I miss the crunch of filo dough, this crustless spanakopita recipe makes it easy to enjoy a low-glycemic dish without feeling like you are missing out on the real deal. You can check out my photos of making it below or just scroll down to the recipe below.
