50+ Substitutions For Common Ingredients

Have you ever been in the middle of a recipe and suddenly realized that you don’t have all the ingredients you need? It’s such a hassling feeling knowing you have to go to the store again for just one thing and now this recipe will take much longer than you planned. Well, to save you some headache and make you just a bit more handy dandy, I’ve compiled a list of the most-used ingredients in recipes, minus the obvious substitutions such as tomato paste for ketchup, rum extract for rum, etc. Hope you get some help with this!

All Spice, 1 TSP ¼ TSP cinnamon, ½ TSP ground cloves & ¼ TSP nutmeg
Arrowroot, 1 TBSP 2 ¼ TBSP cornstarch
Baking Powder, 1 TSP ¼ TSP baking soda, ½ TSP cream of tartar
Balsamic Vinegar, 1 TBSP 1 TBSP apple cider/red wine & ½ TSP sugar
Beef or Chicken Broth, 1 cup 1 cup boiling water & 1 bouillon cube
Beer Equal parts white grape juice, apple juice or apple cider
Brown Sugar, Dark, 1 cup 1 cup light brown sugar & 1 TBSP molasses
Brown Sugar, Light, 1 cup ½ cup dark brown sugar * ½ cup granulated sugar or 1 cup granulated sugar & 2 TBSP molasses
Bread Crumbs, Dry Equal parts crackers
Butter Equal parts margarine or equal parts vegetable shortening
Butter, Melted Equal parts oil
Buttermilk, 1 cup Fill 1 cup with 1 TBSP vinegar/lemon juice and the rest milk
Chives Equal parts scallions
Cinnamon, 1 TSP ½ TSP allspice or 1 TSP cardamom
Coconut Milk Equal parts whole milk
Cottage Cheese Equal parts ricotta cheese
Coffee Cream, 1 cup Fill 1 cup with 3 TBSP melted butter & the rest whole milk
Cornstarch, 1 TBSP 2 TBSP all-purpose flour
Corn Syrup, Dark, 1 cup ¾ cup light corn syrup & ¼ cup light molasses
Corn Syrup, Light, 1 cup 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar dissolved into ¼ cup boiling water
Crème Fraiche, 1 cup 1 cup sour cream or 1 cup mascarpone cheese or ½ cup sour cream & ½ cup heavy whipping cream
Cumin Equal parts chili powder
Currants Equal parts raisins, chopped dates or dried cranberries, blueberries, cherries
Egg, 1 2 TBSP mayonnaise (for cake batter only)
Egg White, 1 2 TBSP meringue powder & 3 TBSP water
Evaporated Milk Equal parts half & half
Flour, 2 TBSP 1 TBSP cornstarch or 4 TSP arrowroot (for thickening only)
Ginger Equal parts allspice
Half & Half, 1 cup ¾ cup whole milk & ¼ whipping cream or fill 1 cup with 1 TBSP melted butter and the rest with milk
Hazelnuts Equal parts macadamia or almonds
Heavy Whipping Cream, 1 cup 1/3 cup melted butter & 2/3 cup whole milk
Honey, 1 cup 1 ¼ cup granulated sugar & ¼ cup of liquid used in the recipe, or ½ cup granulated sugar & ¾ cup maple syrup
Italian Seasoning, 1 TSP ½ TSP dried oregano, ¼ TSP dried basil & ¼ dried thyme
Lemon Juice, 1 TSP ½ TSP vinegar or 1 TSP white wine or 1 TSP lime juice
Mascarpone 1 cup fraiche or 1 cup sour cream
Maple Syrup, 1 cup 1 cup honey or 12 TBSP molasses
Mayonnaise Equal parts sour cream, yogurt or pureed cottage cheese
Molasses, 1 cup 1 cup dark corn syrup/honey/maple syrup or ¾ cup brown sugar or ¾ cup granulated sugar & ¼ cup water
Nutmeg, 1 TSP 1 TSP allspice or 1 ½ TSP cinnamon or 1 TSP mace
Oil, 1 cup 1 cup melted butter, margarine or shortening
Pimento, 2 TBSP 3 TBSP fresh red bell pepper
Polenta Equal parts cornmeal, maize meal or corn grits
Poultry Seasoning, 1 TSP ¼ TSP ground thyme & ¾ TSP sage
Powdered Sugar, 1 cup 1 cup granulated sugar & 1/8 cornstarch processed through food processor
Pumpkin Pie Spice, 1 TSP ½ TSP cinnamon, ¼ TSP ginger, ¼ TSP nutmeg & 1/8 TSP cloves
Raisins Dried cranberries in the same measurement
Saffron Equal parts turmeric
Shallots Equal parts onion, green onion or leek
Shortening Equal parts butter or margarine
Sour Cream Equal parts cup yogurt
Soy Sauce, ½ cup 4 TBSP Worcestershire sauce & 1 TSP water
Tahini Equal parts peanut butter
Treacle Equal parts dark brown sugar
Vegetable Oil Equal parts melted butter or margarine
Vinegar, 1 TBSP 2 TBSP lemon juice
Whipping Cream, 1 cup 1/3 cup melted butter & 2/3 cup whole milk
Wine Equal parts chicken broth, apple juice, grape juice or cranberry juice
Yogurt, 1 cup 1 cup buttermilk or sour cream or 1 cup milk & 1 TSP lemon juice
